Sydney Sweeney’s crime thriller Americana has emerged as one of Hulu’s most-watched films, adding to the actress’s growing momentum following the conclusion of HBO’s hit drama Euphoria.
The R-rated western crime thriller currently ranks among the top movies on Hulu, reflecting strong audience interest despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.
Directed by filmmaker and poet Tony Tost, Americana follows a shy waitress and a military veteran who become entangled in a dangerous pursuit involving a rare Native American artifact. Their journey places them in conflict with a ruthless criminal as events spiral into violence.
The film reunites Sweeney with her former Euphoria co-star, the late Eric Dane. The cast also includes singer Halsey, Paul Walter Hauser, Simon Rex, Zahn McClarnon, Toby Huss and Megan Hensley.
Produced on a reported budget of $9 million, Americana found limited success at the domestic box office, earning roughly $500,000 in ticket sales. However, the film has gained traction through digital platforms and streaming services, helping it reach a wider audience after its theatrical run.
Critics were divided on the neo-western thriller. The film currently holds a mixed score on review aggregation websites, with some reviewers praising its cast while others criticised its storytelling and comparisons to filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s style.
Despite the mixed reception, the movie has proven popular with viewers, highlighting Sweeney’s growing influence as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand young stars.
Sweeney first gained recognition through supporting roles in television series before achieving global fame as Cassie Howard in Euphoria. Since then, she has become one of the industry’s most sought-after actresses, starring in both film and television projects.
The actress has an extensive slate of upcoming productions, including Barbarella, Split Fiction, Sleepy Hollow, The Caretaker, Custom of the Country and Gundam.
Among her most anticipated projects is The Housemaid’s Secret, the sequel to the successful adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. The film reunites Sweeney with director Paul Feig and is scheduled for theatrical release on Dec. 17.
As Americana continues to perform strongly on streaming platforms, the film’s success further strengthens Sweeney’s standing as one of the most bankable stars of her generation.
