    Jazz injects Rs14.6bn as 4G network investment

    ISLAMABAD: Jazz, Pakistan’s number one 4G operator and the largest internet and broadband service provider, has further strengthened its market leadership and continues to drive the digital ecosystem in Pakistan, according to a statement issued on Thursday.

    During the first quarter of 2021, Jazz’s overall subscriber base grew by 11.7% year-over-year (YoY) reaching 69.2 million, 4G customer base grew by 62.3 percent YoY reaching 28.7 million, whereas the overall data users grew by 17.1 percent YoY reaching 47.3 million. 

    During the first quarter of 2021, Jazz invested PKR 14.6 billion, as 4G network investment continued to be the principal focus with population coverage reaching 61 percent during the quarter. Data usage per user also grew considerably to reach 4.5 GB per user.

    The country’s leading fintech, JazzCash, experienced another strong quarter as its user base saw double-digit growth, finishing the quarter with 14 million monthly active mobile wallets. Overall, JazzCash processed transactions amounting to PKR 701 billion during the reporting period. Jazz World, the self-care app, saw strong levels of customer adoption with monthly active user base reaching 8.5 million. The company’s content services also enjoyed further growth with the monthly active user base reaching 2.2 million.

    Jazz awarded contract worth Rs254 million for broadband services

    ISLAMABAD: The Universal Service Fund (USF) has awarded contract worth Rs254 million to Jazz for providing high speed mobile broadband services in rural and remote areas of Punjab, a statement said on Monday.

    Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Syed Amin Ul Haque and Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry witnessed the contract signing ceremony held at the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, Islamabad on Monday.

    The contracts were signed by Haaris Mahmood Chaudhary, CEO, USF with Aamir Ibrahim, CEO Jazz. The Federal Secretary for IT & Telecommunication and Chairman USF Board, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, and Chairman PTA, Major General (R) Amir Azeem Bajwa were also present at the ceremony.

    Chief Guest of the ceremony, Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Syed Amin Ul Haque said: “While the COVID-19 pandemic slackened economic activity, vibrant Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems played a pivotal role in ensuring the availability of essential services to the community.

    In a way, the pandemic actualized the true potential of broadband services, transforming the way people lived their lives.

    In line with the Digital Pakistan initiative, we are committed to providing the required digital ecosystem by working with all relevant stakeholders for enhanced connectivity, improved digital infrastructure, and promotion of emerging technologies.”

    The Federal Minister also congratulated Jazz and USF on the signing of the contract and expressed the hope that residents in Jhelum and Chakwal districts will have better connectivity through Jazz’s state-of-the-art network.

    He stated that the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication through USF will continue to empower the citizens in remote and far-flung areas to ensure that every Pakistani has access to the internet, enabling them to explore new socio-economic opportunities.

    While sharing his views at the ceremony, Aamir Ibrahim, CEO Jazz, said, “Our continued partnership with USF is a reflection of Jazz’s commitment to bridge the digital divide and connect our fellow countrymen with fast and reliable mobile broadband. Our ambition to digitally empower Pakistan is fueled through enhanced connectivity and by creating equal opportunities for all.”

    Also, sharing his thoughts at the ceremony, CEO USF, Haaris Mahmood Chaudhary said: “This project will benefit an unserved population of 0.34 million in 263 unserved mauzas, thereby covering an unserved area of 4,002 sq.km. of Jhelum and Chakwal districts.

    “By providing mobile broadband to the unserved muazas across the country, USF is playing a crucial role in the socio-economic progress of the people at the grassroots level and have opened the doors of opportunities for the masses.

    “USF will continue to work towards achieving the vision of Digital Pakistan”.

    Furthermore, he thanked the Federal Minister and the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication for their continued support and guidance.

    Telenor, Jazz awarded Rs680 mn next generation broadband project

    ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information Technology on Wednesday approved award of contracts to Telenor and PMCL (Jazz) worth Rs680 Million in total for Kurram and Sanghar Lots.

    PMCL (Jazz) is being awarded the contract of Kurram Lot while Telenor is being awarded the contract of Sanghar Lot under Next Generation Broadband for Sustainable Development (NG-BSD) Programme.

    Federal Secretary Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui chaired 68th Board of Directors meeting of Universal Service Fund Company here on Wednesday.

    Chairman PTA Maj Gen (R) Amir Azeem Bajwa was also present in the meeting.

    This project is part of the inclusive approach of the Government and to strengthen the pillar of connectivity under Digital Pakistan.

    During the meeting Chairman USF Board and Secretary IT was apprised about the progress of USF projects. The Hi-speed Broadband services in Kurram Lot will benefit an unserved population of approximately 400,000 thereby covering 200 unserved muazas and an approximate unserved area of 2,900 sq. km.

    Kurram Lot encompasses Frontier Region Kurram, Lower Kurram and Upper Kurram tehsils. Similarly, an unserved population of approximately 1.4 million will gain advantage from Hi-speed Broadband services in Sanghar Lot.

    The Lot consists of Sanghar and Umerkot districts with an approximate unserved area of 12,000 sq. km and 500 unserved mauzas.

    The Chairman USF Board and Secretary IT, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui emphasized on connecting the people of Pakistan who did not have access to latest ICT facilities.

    He also said these projects will bring the people of Kurram and Sanghar at par with the wider society and helpful in solving the problems of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment.

    Furthermore, the Federal Secretary welcomed Prime Minister’s most recent expression of support for the continued and ongoing work of Digital Pakistan.

    He stressed the importance of the Ministry of IT and Telecom remaining closely engaged to support and encourage implementation of the vision.

    In addition to this, he also acknowledged other board members’ valuable contribution to make advancements in implementation of USF projects.

    The Board greatly appreciated Chairman USF Board and Secretary IT for providing guidance and wisdom to accomplish USF mission.

    Other board members comprising Shabahat Ali Shah, Executive Director, NITB; Ifran Wahab, CEO-Telenor Cluster Head for Emerging Asia and Nominee of Mobile Cellular Operators; Imran Akhtar Shah, VP for Government Sales, Super Net Pvt Ltd and Nominee of Data Licensees; Rashid Khan, CEO PTCL and Nominee of Fixed Line Operators; Kaukab Iqbal, Chairman, Consumer Association of Pakistan and Nominee of Consumer Group and management of USF Co. also attended the meeting.

    Jazz, Enfrashare partner to accelerate telecom infrastructure

    KARACHI: Jazz, Pakistan’s leading digital communications company, and Enfrashare (Private) Limited have signed an agreement to accelerate growth in telecommunications infrastructure.

    This partnership will propel Jazz in strategically expanding its digital infrastructure robustness across both the rural and urban sections of the country, said a statement on Monday.

    Under this partnership, Enfrashare will develop the telecom infrastructure and also provide key services for Jazz, thereby reducing Jazz’s capital investment, paving the way for the digital giant to focus on core business functions and continue upscaling its connectivity reach.

    This collaboration will also enhance Pakistan’s critical communication infrastructure network, while also allowing Jazz to meet its coverage and capacity requirements.

    To enable this and establish operations, Engro Group has already approved an investment of PKR 7.5 billion in the company.
