    Karachi Chamber demands declaring rain emergency

    KARACHI: Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has demanded the government of declaring an emergency after human and financial losses in the city during torrential rains in past few days.

    KCCI President Muhammad Idrees in statement urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take immediate measures to prevent further human and financial losses in the city as more rains had been predicted.

    Idrees lamented the present situation in Karachi after heavy downpour especially during the past 24 hours. He said the provincial and local authorities had failed to relief and take measures to control the flooding like situation.

    “The city collects about 70 per cent revenue for the national exchequer. But the present situation has created insecurity amongst the people of the metropolis,” he said.

    “The Wall Street of Pakistan i.e. I. I. Chundrigar Road is completely vanished due to flooding. Besides, the old city area were also showing disaster everywhere,” he added.

    The KCCI President urged the Prime Minister to announce compensation to the losses and also grant duty and tax relief for the business community.

    He pointed out that there was no allocation in the budget 2022/2023 for the financial hub. He further pointed out that the previous government had allocated around Rs1.1 trillion for the city but no development project was seen.

    Idrees demanded the federal government to take control of the city and provide maximum relief to avoid further losses in expected rains.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday issued high alert for all the authorities to remain vigilant as strong monsoon weather system likely to persist during the ongoing week.

    In a statement the MET office said that strong monsoon weather system giving rains in the country is likely to persist during the week.

    Under the influence of this weather system

    Rain-wind-thundershower (with few heavy to very heavy falls) is expected in Kashmir, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sargodha, Mianwali, Khushab, Bhakkar and Layyah, Dir, Swat, Buner, Kohistan, Shangla, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, Nowshera, Peshawar, Waziristan, Kurrum, Bannu, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, Tank, Karak and Dera Ismail Khan, Gilgit-Baltistan (Ghizer, Astore, Diamer, Skardu, Gilgit, Hunza Nagar, Ghanche and Kharmang) from Monday to Thursday.

    Rain/wind-thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) is expected in Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Jaffarabad, Qila Saifullah, Qila Abdallah, Kohlu, Loralai, Barkhan, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech, Panjgur, Mastung, Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Harnai, Sukkar, Jaccobabad, Larkana, Khairpur, Tharparker, Sanghar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad and Karachi from Monday to Friday.

    Possible Impacts:

    Heavy rain may generate flash flooding in Local/Barsati Nullahs of Sialkot, Narowal, hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, Balochistan, Shangla, Buner, Batgram, Upper Swat, Kohistan and Kashmir from Monday to Wednesday

    Urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Peshawar and Faisalabad, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin during the period.

    Heavy rains may trigger landslides in the vulnerable areas of Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa from Monday to Wednesday

    Possibility of damaging effects due to wind-storm along the western boarder of Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa.

    Water level rise in the major rivers and improvement in water reservoirs.

    “All concerned authorities are advised to remain “ALERT” during the forecast period.”

    KATI seeks precautionary measures before rains

    KARACHI: Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) has urged the authorities to take precautionary measures before heavy rains in order to avoid human and financial losses.

    Patron-in-Chief S M Muneer and President Saleem-uz-Zaman has said that the Meteorological Department in coming days has forecast heavy rains in Karachi.

    In such cases, precautionary measures should be taken to avoid any possible incident. K-Electric, at the request of KATI, had elevated the grid stations of the industrial area and secured the electrical installations to save precious lives, which has greatly reduced the risk of any possible accidents during rains.

    They embassies on awareness campaigns and special messages should be issued to the people to take precautionary measures before the rains.

    S M Muneer appealed to the people of Karachi, especially the employees and labors to be careful in the rains, stay away from electrical installations and avoid installing Kunda during rainy season.

    Saleem-uz-Zaman requested the factory’s administrations of Korangi Industrial Area to take precautionary measures before the rains and save the lives of the employees.

    President KATI suggested that special messages be issued by the concerned departments for pre-rain awareness and special teams be formed to protect precious human lives and property of the people from damage.

    Saleem-uz-Zaman appealed to the government agencies to complete the repair of the city’s highways and manholes so that the rains do not become a nuisance for the citizens like last year.
