SBP imposes penalty of Rs109 million on four banks
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has imposed an amount of Rs109 million as monetary penalty on four banks for violating regulatory provisions, including anti-money laundering (AML) and countering financing of terrorism (CFT).

The central bank on Wednesday issued details of monetary penalty imposed on banks during quarter (January – March) 2022 for regulatory violations.
According to details the highest penalty amount of Rs40.90 million has been imposed on Albaraka Bank (Pakistan) Limited for violating regulatory instructions pertaining to AML/CFT, Asset Quality, FX & General Banking Operations etc.

In addition to penal action, the SBP directed the bank to conduct an internal inquiry on breaches of regulatory instructions and take disciplinary action against the delinquent officials.
The second highest penal amount Rs38.50 million has been imposed on Askari Bank Limited for violation of regulatory instructions pertaining to Customer Due Diligence (CDD) / Know Your Customer (KYC), asset management and general banking operations.

The SBP directed Askari Bank to strengthen its controls/processes in the identified areas.
The central bank also imposed monetary penalty amounting Rs19.27 million and Rs10.265 million on National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and U Microfinance Bank Limited, respectively.

The SBP from July 2019 started public disclosure of penal action against banks. “Enforcement actions are an integral part of regulatory regime which involves imposition of monetary penalties and other actions against institutions and individuals for violations of laws, rules, regulations, guidelines or directives issued by SBP from time to time,” according to a circular issued by the central bank.
In order to bring more transparency and strengthen market discipline, SBP has decided to publicly disclose significant enforcement actions.

SBP imposes Rs1.45 billion penalty on 18 banks in 2021
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has imposed Rs1.45 billion as monetary penalty on 18 financial institutions for violating regulatory provisions during the year ended December 31, 2021.
According to data compiled by PkRevenue.com related to significant action taken during the year 2021, the SBP imposed Rs1.45 billion as monetary penalty on 18 financial institutions.
The central bank issues data of significant actions against banks on quarterly basis. The detail of imposition of monetary penalty during each quarter of 2021 is as: January – March, Rs 97.6 million; April – June, Rs 525.25 million; July – June, Rs465.04 million; and October – December Rs58 million.

The banks mostly violated regulatory provisions related to foreign exchange and general banking operations. Further, banks were also found violating instruction pertaining to anti-money laundering (AML) and counter financing of terrorism (CFT).
Besides, the banks had also violated instructions pertaining to customer due diligence (CDD) and know your customer (KYC).

SBP imposes penalty of Rs58 million on five banks
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has imposed penalty of Rs58 million on five commercial banks for violating regulatory provisions during quarter ended December 31, 2021.
According to an official note released on Tuesday, the SBP said it had imposed penalty on five commercial banks, included: Bank Alhabib Limited, The Bank of Punjab, Standard Chartered Bank (Pakistan) Limited), Askar Bank Limited and National Bank of Pakistan.

The central bank said that the penalty was imposed on the banks for violating regulatory instructions pertaining to general banking operations.
The details of monetary penalties on the banks are: Bank Alhabib Limited, Rs13.684 million; The Bank of Punjab, Rs12.545 million; Askari Bank Limited, Rs10.300 million, National Bank of Pakistan, Rs10.26 million.
The SBP said that in addition to penal action, the bank has been advised to strengthen processes with respect to identified areas.

The total monetary penalty on banks during past six months (July – December) 2021 has increased to Rs523 million.
Previously, the SBP imposed monetary penalty of Rs455 million on four banks for the quarter ended September 30, 2021. During this quarter the SBP imposed heavy penalty of Rs280.51 million on National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) for violating regulator instructions pertaining to AML/CFT. Similarly, an amount of Rs132.437 has been imposed on Silk Bank Limited for violating provisions of anti-money laundering and counter financing of terrorism.

MCB Bank pays penalties amounting Rs191.76 million
KARACHI: MCB Bank has paid an amount of Rs191.76 million as penalties for various regulatory violations during the year ended December 31, 2020.
According to financial results released by the bank for the year ended December 31, 2020, the bank paid the amount of Rs191.76 million to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) as penalties for violation of various regulations.
The payment of penalty increased registered a phenomenal growth in the year ended December 31, 2020 when compared with Rs46.07 million paid in the preceding year.
The rise in penal amount showed the violation of regulatory provisions had increased during the year. The SBP imposes the penalty on banks for mainly violating Know Your Customer (KYC) and provisions related to anti money laundering laws.
