Taylor Swift fans have another reason to celebrate as the pop icon is officially confirmed to be the sole writer and director of her upcoming debut feature film.
The Anti-Hero hitmaker, 35, was previously rumored to have tapped acclaimed screenwriter Alice Birch for the project, but those reports have now been debunked. Instead, Swift will pen the screenplay herself, making the film entirely her creative vision from start to finish.
An insider close to the production shared the exciting update with E! News, confirming that Searchlight Pictures has begun work on the highly anticipated project. The collaboration was first announced in 2022, with Searchlight presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield praising the Grammy-winning artist.
“Taylor is a once-in-a-generation artist and storyteller,” they said in a press release at the time. “It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting new creative journey.”
Swift’s transition to filmmaking comes as no surprise to her fans. Over the years, she has shown a growing passion for working behind the camera, directing many of her own music videos, including the critically acclaimed All Too Well: The Short Film in 2021. Starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, the short film showcased Swift’s narrative skills and cinematic vision, further fueling speculation that a feature-length project was on the horizon.
Speaking at the All Too Well screening, Swift reflected on her creative leap. “I think I gave myself permission to completely make that jump into making a narrative short film because this is not a music video; we approached everything differently.
Shooting on 35mm and all the creative decisions we made to bring these characters and this world to life was an entirely new experience,” she said.
No release date or plot details for the upcoming film have been revealed yet, but with Swift’s artistic track record, fans are already anticipating a unique and compelling cinematic debut.
