Taylor Swift reveals the layered wordplay behind “I Knew It, I Knew You”, explaining how childhood memories and Toy Story imagery shaped the lyrics.
Taylor Swift has revealed the layered wordplay behind “I Knew It, I Knew You”, her song co-written with Jack Antonoff for Toy Story 5.
During a rare appearance on the iHeartCountry House Party broadcast on Saturday, September 5, Swift explained how several lyrics in the song were deliberately written to carry multiple meanings.
“I love that the lyrics of this song are really being delved into by the fans,” Swift said, explaining that the limited length of a soundtrack song meant she had to convey several ideas within a small amount of space.
Taylor Swift explains ‘daze’ and ‘days’ wordplay
Swift highlighted the song’s opening lines: “I knew you through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer / Parachutes for the free fall of being younger.”
She explained that the word “daze”, although officially spelled that way, was also intended to evoke “days”.
According to Swift, the wording captures the feeling of looking back on childhood as a beautiful but slightly blurred memory.
The lyric also connects to the world of Toy Story, where the toy characters experience their surroundings from close to the ground, making blades of grass appear enormous.
Parachute lyric carries a double meaning
Swift also explained the double meaning behind the song’s reference to parachutes.
The image connects to the plastic army men featured in the Toy Story franchise while also representing someone who helps another person through the emotional “free fall” associated with growing up.
The singer said this kind of detailed wordplay has long been an important part of her songwriting approach.
“It’s, kind of, been brought to my attention, and I agree with this, that I love to use detail in my lyricism,” Swift said.
Her comments give fans another glimpse into the creative process behind the song and show how she incorporated elements of the Toy Story universe into its lyrics.
Taylor Swift adds to Toy Story 5 soundtrack
“I Knew It, I Knew You” serves as Swift’s contribution to the soundtrack of Toy Story 5, adding a new musical chapter to one of Disney and Pixar’s most recognisable film franchises.
The song’s layered references allow Swift to blend her detailed songwriting style with imagery associated with the Toy Story universe, while exploring themes of childhood, memory and growing up.
