Telenor Signs Agreement to Implement Smart Metering

Telenor Pakistan

Islamabad, December 2024 – Telenor Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone by signing the country’s first-ever tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement smart metering technology at its Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K).

This pioneering initiative, according to a news release, aims to empower communities by leveraging smart metering technology to enhance energy efficiency and ensure accurate electricity consumption measurements. The tripartite agreement unites Telenor Pakistan, the Government of AJ&K, and the Sustainable Business & Energy Efficiency Consortium (SBEEC) to pilot a cutting-edge smart metering solution. This collaboration enables consumers and power distribution companies to monitor electricity usage in real time.

The innovative solution will ensure precise billing, minimize energy wastage through real-time monitoring of usage patterns, and facilitate data-driven decision-making to optimize resource utilization. Moreover, this initiative aligns seamlessly with Telenor Pakistan’s broader vision of driving socio-economic development through digital solutions.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at Telenor Pakistan’s Campus 345 in Islamabad. Notable attendees included Awais Vohra, Chief Technical Officer of Telenor Pakistan; Irshad Ahmed Qureshi, Secretary of the Electricity Department, Government of AJ&K; and Zaffar Sami, Executive Director of SBEEC, alongside other senior officials from the collaborating organizations.

We are grateful to the AJK government for embracing innovative technologies. This initiative ensures real-time consumption monitoring, promotes digitalization, and addresses system inefficiencies to reduce losses, ultimately benefiting consumers. Public-private collaboration is key to advancing digital solutions, and Telenor is proud to lead this effort.”

Irshad Ahmed Qureshi, Secretary of the Electricity Department, AJ&K, emphasized, “We are delighted to collaborate with Telenor Pakistan and SBEEC on this transformative project. Smart metering represents a pivotal shift in energy efficiency, and this partnership underscores our shared commitment to leveraging technology for the region’s socio-economic uplift. We anticipate that this pilot project will set a benchmark for scaling similar initiatives nationwide.”

The pilot project is expected to serve as a model for scaling up smart metering initiatives across Pakistan.
