Tesla sets September date for Cybercab robotaxi launch

Tesla is reportedly preparing to unveil its purpose-built autonomous vehicle in Austin as it moves closer to expanding its robotaxi ambitions.

Tesla is reportedly preparing to launch its long-awaited Cybercab robotaxi in early September, marking a major step in the electric vehicle maker’s push into autonomous transportation.

Tesla-focused news outlet Teslarati reported that the company has scheduled the Cybercab event for September 3 in Austin, Texas, where Tesla is headquartered. The publication said it received an invitation to the event, although Tesla has not publicly confirmed the date.

The event is expected to go beyond a conventional vehicle unveiling, with the company likely to highlight the Cybercab’s purpose-built autonomous driving capabilities.

The Cybercab has been designed without a steering wheel or pedals and is intended to rely entirely on self-driving technology for autonomous operation.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously said the company intends to sell the Cybercab to private customers for less than $30,000.

Cybercab central to Tesla’s robotaxi plans

First unveiled in October 2024, the Cybercab is a key part of Tesla’s plans to develop a large-scale robotaxi network.

The company is expected to operate the vehicles alongside Model Y cars, which have been used for autonomous passenger rides in real-world environments.

According to technology publication The Information, Tesla plans to initially deploy Cybercab vehicles by providing rides to employees on public roads before expanding the vehicles into its commercial robotaxi service.

The September launch could therefore represent an important milestone in Tesla’s strategy to make autonomous driving a major part of its future business, revenue model and artificial intelligence ambitions.
