Fans of The Last of Us can look forward to more gripping drama, as HBO has officially confirmed that Season 3 of the hit action-adventure series is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
According to a report by NME, HBO’s Head of Drama Francesca Orsi previously shared that early discussions with series co-creator Craig Mazin hinted the show could run for up to five seasons. While nothing was finalized then, the direction of the story is now taking shape.
Recently, HBO CEO Casey Bloys spoke to Variety, confirming that the next installment of The Last of Us is definitely planned for release in 2027. He noted that Mazin is still deciding whether the continuation will span two more seasons or one extended final season. “It hasn’t been decided yet,” said Bloys, adding that he is following Mazin’s creative vision closely.
The series, which is based on the globally acclaimed PlayStation video game, is set in a post-apocalyptic United States, two decades after a deadly fungal outbreak wiped out much of the population. The infection transforms humans into violent, zombie-like creatures, leaving survivors to battle for their lives.
One of the most significant turning points in the storyline came in Season 2 with the shocking death of Joel Miller, portrayed by Pedro Pascal. Miller, a grizzled smuggler, had been tasked with protecting Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey), a teenage girl believed to hold the key to a cure.
Season 2 also marked the departure of Neil Druckmann, the game’s original creator and a key contributor to the show’s earlier success.
While HBO has not yet confirmed the exact release date for Season 3 of The Last of Us, the announcement has already reignited excitement among fans who are eager to see how the story unfolds after Joel’s death and Ellie’s journey forward.
Stay tuned for more updates as The Last of Us continues to evolve into one of HBO’s most compelling and emotionally intense franchises.
