Universal Pictures has officially confirmed that John Hannah will reunite with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for the highly anticipated fourth installment of The Mummy franchise, marking a major moment for fans of the iconic adventure series.
Hannah, best known for playing the witty and lovable Jonathan Carnahan—brother to Evelyn and brother-in-law to Rick O’Connell—was a standout character in the original trilogy. His comedic timing and charm helped define the franchise’s unique blend of action, horror, and humor.
The confirmation comes nearly two decades after the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the third film in the series, where Jonathan was last seen managing a nightclub in Shanghai. Speculation about a fourth film had been circulating for weeks before the studio officially announced the sequel last month.
Earlier this year, Hannah revealed he had not yet been formally approached but expressed enthusiasm about returning. In an interview, he shared that reconnecting with the original cast “would be fun” and something he would gladly consider. The actor also reflected on his initial doubts about joining The Mummy, admitting he once questioned whether the project suited his career. However, he later embraced the films’ family-friendly appeal and global success.
Now, with development underway, The Mummy 4 is shaping up to be a nostalgic revival of the beloved franchise. The film is currently in early production stages and is expected to hit theaters in 2028.
While only Fraser, Weisz, and Hannah have been confirmed so far, there are strong hints that more original cast members could return, as efforts are reportedly underway to reunite the core team that made the series a worldwide hit.
