Thundershower Alert: Karachi Set to Receive Rain on July 17

ISLAMABAD, July 16, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast indicating that Karachi is likely to experience a thundershower on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. This forecast comes as part of a broader weather pattern affecting the Sindh province and other regions of the country.

According to the PMD, the weather on Wednesday in Sindh will be predominantly hot and humid across most districts. However, rain-windstorms and thundershower are expected at isolated locations, including Tharparkar, Umarkot, Mithi, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, Karachi, and Sajawal. This forecast suggests a brief respite from the scorching summer heat for residents in these areas.

On a national level, the PMD’s forecast for July 17 indicates that most parts of Pakistan will continue to experience hot and humid conditions. Nonetheless, isolated rain-windstorms and thundershower are anticipated in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Potohar region, Islamabad, northeast Punjab, southeast and lower Sindh, northeast and south Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.

Regarding the synoptic situation, the PMD reports that light to moderate monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are penetrating central and upper parts of Pakistan. Additionally, a westerly wave is prevailing over the upper regions of the country, contributing to the varied weather conditions expected.

For Tuesday, July 16, the weather remains largely hot and humid in most parts of Pakistan. Nevertheless, isolated rain-windstorms and thundershower are forecasted for southeast and lower Sindh, northeast and south Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Punjab, the Potohar region, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.

Reflecting on the past 24 hours, the weather across Pakistan has been mostly hot and humid, with isolated rain-windstorms and thundershower occurring in northeastern Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and lower Sindh. The PMD recorded the following rainfall (in mm): Baluchistan: Zhob 15, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Dir (Upper 07 & Lower Dir 03), Bacha Khan Airport 06, Mirkhani 05, Saidu Sharif 02, Peshawar (City 02), Cherat, Malam Jabba, Takht Bai 01, Sindh: Chhor 03, Mithi 01.

Additionally, the highest maximum temperatures recorded yesterday were in Nokundi at 48°C, followed by Dalbandin at 46°C, and Lasbella and Turbat at 45°C.
