Thundershower Expected in Upper Punjab on August 14: Met Office Issues Warning

Monsoon Rainfall

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory indicating the likelihood of a thundershower in the upper Punjab region on August 14, 2023.

This forecast includes a rain-wind and thundershower for Upper Punjab, the Pothohar region, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Kashmir on August 14, 2023

Additionally, thundershower is anticipated at isolated locations in northeast Punjab, the Pothohar region, and Kashmir during this period. The rest of the country is expected to experience hot and humid weather.

The Met Office has alerted residents to the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall leading to increased water flows in local Nullahs and streams in areas such as Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Manshera, Abbottabad, and Rawalpindi/Islamabad between the 14th and 16th of August.

Urban flooding is a concern for low-lying areas in cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and their surroundings on the 14th and 15th of August.

There’s also a risk of landslides in vulnerable areas like Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and the hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during this wet spell. The synoptic situation contributing to these weather conditions involves moist currents from the Arabian Sea penetrating the upper parts of the country.

Additionally, a shallow westerly wave is present in these upper regions. Looking at the past 24 hours, most parts of the country experienced hot and humid weather.

However, Muzaffarabad recorded a rainfall of 02 mm during this period. The highest maximum temperatures for today were recorded as follows: Chilas at 44°C, Dalbandin at 43°C, and Noor Pur Thal also at 43°C.

Residents and authorities in the affected regions are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this anticipated thundershower and the associated weather conditions.
