Thundershowers forecast for Islamabad with risk of urban flooding

Weather Forecast Thundershowers

Islamabad, August 6, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast thundershowers in Islamabad and its surrounding areas on August 7, warning that heavy rainfall could lead to urban flooding in low-lying parts of the capital.

According to the PMD, the weather in Islamabad on Wednesday is expected to remain partly cloudy, with chances of rain, wind, and thundershowers, particularly during the evening and night hours. Some areas may experience isolated heavy rainfall, which could increase the risk of water accumulation and localized flooding.

On Thursday, Islamabad will likely see hot and humid weather conditions in the daytime, followed by rain, wind, and thundershowers later in the day. The probability of rainfall on Thursday is estimated at 55%, and authorities have urged residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions, especially in flood-prone areas.

The PMD has also issued a warning for other cities, including Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, and Nowshera, where urban flooding is possible due to heavy rain. Mountainous areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Swat, and parts of Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may face landslides or mudslides, potentially causing road blockages.

This unstable weather pattern is due to seasonal low pressure over northwest Balochistan, combined with active monsoon currents and a westerly wave affecting the upper parts of the country.

In the past 24 hours, Islamabad recorded multiple rainfall readings: Airport (30 mm), Saidpur (28 mm), Golra (5 mm), and Bokra (1 mm), with thundershowers occurring across upper Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Other major rainfall figures included 86 mm in Gujrat, 37 mm in Narowal, and 28 mm in Multan.

Despite the rainfall, temperatures remained high in many areas, with Dalbandin hitting 45°C and Nokkundi at 44°C.

The PMD advises the public to stay updated on weather reports and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy thundershowers, especially in vulnerable zones of Islamabad and other affected cities.
