Thunderstorm alert: NDMA warns next 24 hours critical across Pakistan

Thudershower

Islamabad, March 25, 2026 – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning that the next 12 to 24 hours will be crucial as thunderstorms, rainfall, and strong winds are expected to impact multiple regions across Pakistan.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), a system of western winds entering from southwestern Balochistan is likely to trigger widespread showers, gusty winds, and isolated hailstorms in several parts of the country.

Urban Flooding Risk in Major Cities

The NDMA has cautioned about possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, and Chakwal due to ongoing and expected rainfall. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.

Punjab and Sindh to Receive Widespread Rain

Rain with thunderstorms and strong winds is forecast in several cities across Punjab, including Murree, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, and Bahawalpur. Additional districts such as Sialkot, Jhelum, Kasur, and Rahim Yar Khan are also expected to experience wet weather conditions.

In Sindh, rain and thunderstorms are likely in Kashmore, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Khairpur during the same period.

Flash Flood Threat in KP and Balochistan

The NDMA has warned of potential flash floods in parts of Balochistan, particularly in Turbat, Gwadar, Khuzdar, and Lasbela. Similarly, flood-like conditions are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Mardan, Bannu, Swabi, and Dera Ismail Khan.

Authorities have urged local administrations to remain on high alert and prepare for emergency response in vulnerable districts.

Snowfall Expected in Northern Areas

Upper regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, are likely to receive snowfall along with rain and thunderstorms. Areas such as Skardu, Hunza, Muzaffarabad, and Neelum Valley may see travel disruptions due to adverse weather.

Public Advisory and Safety Measures

The NDMA warned that strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms could damage weak structures, trees, and power lines, while slippery roads may disrupt traffic. Continuous rainfall in hilly areas also increases the risk of landslides.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, drive cautiously, and stay away from trees and fragile structures during storms. Tourists planning to visit northern areas are urged to check weather and road conditions in advance.

The authority has also encouraged the public to stay updated through its official mobile application, Pak NDMA Disaster Alert, for real-time alerts and safety information.

Provincial and district administrations have been directed to remain vigilant and take all necessary measures to handle the expected weather situation effectively.
