Karachi, September 4, 2023 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather report for the month of September 2023, predicting the likelihood of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall in various parts of the country.
According to the Met office, the overall outlook suggests near-normal rainfall in most areas of Pakistan for the month of September. However, it also anticipates thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall during the forecasted month.
The synoptic situation is influenced by positive phases of climate indicators such as El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which are expected to persist. The climatic outlook for Pakistan in September 2023 is summarized as follows:
Slightly Above Normal Temperatures: Nationwide temperatures are forecasted to remain slightly above normal.
Potential Urban Flooding: While temperatures are decreasing, there remains a risk of isolated extreme rainfall that could lead to urban flooding, particularly in the first week of September.
Risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs): The short warming episode and/or extreme rainfall events may pose a risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in Northern Pakistan. These are sudden floods caused by the release of water from glacial lakes.
Higher Mean Temperatures in Major Cities: Major cities across Pakistan are expected to experience mean temperatures higher than normal.
Satisfactory Water Availability: There should be a satisfactory amount of water available for irrigation and power sectors during September.
No Adverse Impact on Kharif Crops: The expected rains during September are not likely to have an adverse impact on the growth of Kharif crops, which are typically sown during the monsoon season in Pakistan.
This weather forecast highlights the potential for significant rainfall events, which can be both beneficial for water resources and agriculture but also pose challenges such as flooding in urban areas and the risk of GLOFs in mountainous regions. It is important for local authorities and communities to remain vigilant and prepared for such weather events.
