TikTok Vows to Ensure Quality Content in Pakistan

Islamabad, November 20, 2024 – A delegation from TikTok has assured authorities in Pakistan of its commitment to providing quality and meaningful content through its platform, aiming to strengthen its positive impact on society.

The TikTok delegation, led by its Director of Public Policy, Emir Gelen, met with the Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication, Ms. Shaza Fatima Khawaja, at her office on Wednesday. Secretary IT, Zarrar Hasham Khan, was also present during the meeting.

The discussion focused on mutual interests, especially regarding the availability of productive and educational content on social media platforms. The delegation highlighted TikTok’s ongoing initiatives in Pakistan and outlined its future programs designed to benefit users in the country.

Ms. Shaza Fatima Khawaja acknowledged TikTok’s massive user base in Pakistan and emphasized the importance of ensuring quality content on the platform. She noted that platforms like TikTok hold immense potential for promoting education, skills development, and digital literacy among the youth. The Minister suggested that TikTok could serve as a dynamic tool to impart practical skills, career guidance, and basic education, especially to underprivileged segments of society. She assured TikTok of the Ministry’s full support in achieving these objectives.

Additionally, Ms. Shaza Fatima urged TikTok to implement robust content moderation policies to curb misinformation, harmful material, and unethical content. She encouraged the platform to collaborate with local stakeholders, including educational institutions, to tailor programs to Pakistan’s cultural and social dynamics.

The delegation assured the Minister that TikTok would prioritize meaningful and quality content while working to align its platform with Pakistan’s cultural values and developmental goals. They expressed a willingness to partner with the Ministry of IT and its attached departments to expand their initiatives and enhance the platform’s contribution to education and community-building in Pakistan.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to ensuring that social media serves as a tool for positive change in society.
