New Zealand cricket has announced that veteran fast bowler Tim Southee has stepped down as the Test captain, with Tom Latham set to take over the reins. Southee, who has led the Black Caps since Kane Williamson relinquished the role at the end of 2022, leaves behind a commendable record, having guided the team to six victories and two draws in 14 Test matches.
The 35-year-old pacer explained that his decision to step down was in the best interests of the team, emphasizing his desire to focus on personal performance and support Latham’s leadership. “Captaining the Black Caps in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honour and privilege,” Southee said. “I’ve always put the team first, and I believe stepping down is the best decision for the team moving forward.”
Southee further stated that by concentrating on his individual performances, he hopes to regain his best form and continue taking wickets for New Zealand. “I’ll continue supporting my teammates, especially the young bowlers coming through on the international stage,” he added. He also expressed confidence in Tom Latham, stating, “I wish Tom all the best in the role, and he knows I’ll be there to support him just as he has supported me over the years.”
Southee’s decision to step aside comes as he prepares for New Zealand’s upcoming ICC World Test Championship series against India, which kicks off later this month. New Zealand coach Gary Stead praised the fast bowler for his leadership and dedication to the team. “Tim’s a fantastic player and a respected leader. He’s been an invaluable part of New Zealand Cricket for nearly 17 years, and I’d like to acknowledge his humility in stepping down from the captaincy,” Stead said.
Stead highlighted Southee’s continued importance to the team moving forward, despite the change in leadership. “It’s never easy giving up something you love, but Tim has made this decision with the team’s best interests at heart. He remains one of our greatest ever players, and we still see him playing a key role in our Test side.”
The three-match Test series between New Zealand and India is set to commence in Bengaluru on October 16, marking Latham’s first series as the newly appointed captain of the Black Caps.
