Tom Cruise Prepares Sequel to NASCAR Classic ‘Days of Thunder’

Tom Cruise is gearing up for an unexpected sequel to his 1990 NASCAR film Days of Thunder. Despite the original film’s mixed reviews and moderate box office performance, Cruise is optimistic he can replicate the magic he brought to Top Gun: Maverick, which became a massive hit.

Paramount Pictures, the studio behind Days of Thunder, is already on board, actively searching for writers to develop a fresh script that can captivate modern audiences.

Cruise, renowned for his dedication to every detail, has full script approval for the project. However, he’s balancing a packed schedule, which includes a new film with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, a space movie with Doug Liman, and even discussions about a Top Gun: Maverick sequel.

A studio insider shared, “He’s talking [to Paramount] about Top Gun and Days of Thunder. The project depends on the story and, ultimately, the script.”

Racing films have recently captured audiences’ attention, with Ford v Ferrari being a notable success and Brad Pitt’s upcoming F1 film generating excitement. However, Days of Thunder holds a unique appeal, as its NASCAR theme gives it a distinct American flair, unlike other racing films.

Famed director Quentin Tarantino has also praised Days of Thunder, calling it his favorite racing movie, acknowledging its spirited take on the genre.

Beyond the professional interest, Days of Thunder holds personal significance for Cruise, as he met his former wife, Nicole Kidman, on the set of the original. The possibility of a sequel depends not only on the script but also on Cruise’s willingness to take on the project amidst his other commitments.

In the meantime, Cruise is close to completing Mission: Impossible 8, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, which has reached a staggering $400 million in production costs. Paramount is promoting the film as the final chapter in the Mission: Impossible franchise, though Cruise himself has hinted at a desire to continue playing Ethan Hunt into his 80s.

The first trailer for Mission: Impossible 8 is expected to drop soon, potentially premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, generating even more excitement for Cruise’s impressive slate of projects.
