Tom Cruise is back on the big screen with a brand-new comedy, teaming up with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for the first time. Warner Bros. released a teaser for the film, titled Digger, on December 18, giving fans a mysterious first look at Cruise outside his usual action franchises.

The short clip features the 63-year-old actor silhouetted, dancing with a shovel and standing atop a fence on what appears to be an ocean-side boardwalk. Sharing the teaser on Instagram, Cruise wrote:

“In Digger we trust. DIGGER. A comedy of catastrophic proportions. Only in theaters October 2026.”

Warner Bros. confirmed that Cruise will play a character named Digger Rockwell, marking his first major project outside the Mission: Impossible or Top Gun franchises since 2017’s American Made and The Mummy.

The collaboration between Cruise and Iñárritu, 62, was first reported in February 2024. Iñárritu, a four-time Academy Award winner known for Birdman and The Revenant, previously teased the project while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter. At the time, the film was operating under a working title.

“It’s scary and funny and beautiful,” Iñárritu said. “I know comedy is not what people expect from me or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me, but I don’t like to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a little.”

Cruise was last seen in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and fans are excited to see him in an entirely different role. The unexpected partnership with Iñárritu has already generated buzz online, with anticipation building for the film’s theatrical release.

Digger is set to hit cinemas in October 2026, promising a mix of humor, adventure, and the signature talents of both Cruise and Iñárritu.
