Marvel star says the next Spider-Man has already been planned as he looks forward to passing the superhero mantle
Tom Holland has confirmed that Marvel Studios already has a long-term plan for the next actor to take over the role of Spider-Man, revealing that discussions about the character’s future began after the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on Thursday, July 30, Holland shared that the transition to a new Spider-Man has been carefully mapped out, even though the details could evolve over time.
“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Holland said.
The actor explained that while the roadmap is likely to change as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) evolves, he already has a clear vision of how Spider-Man’s legacy will eventually be passed on.
“It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting,” he added.
Holland also admitted that discussing the future of the beloved superhero remains one of the most exciting parts of his role.
“I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure.”
Tom Holland hopes to mentor the next Spider-Man
Holland, who made his MCU debut as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War (2016), has portrayed the web-slinger in multiple blockbuster films, including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
He is the third actor to play Spider-Man on the big screen after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Holland said he hopes to guide the next Spider-Man actor in the same way Robert Downey Jr. mentored him during his early years in the MCU.
“In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next,” Holland said.
Owen Cooper named as Holland’s ideal successor
When asked who he would like to see inherit the Spider-Man role, Holland singled out rising British actor Owen Cooper, praising his talent and growing reputation.
“Owen Cooper would be awesome,” Holland told Esquire. “Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now.”
Holland is currently promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which officially premiered in theatres on July 31, while fans continue to speculate about the future direction of the Spider-Man franchise and the eventual introduction of a new web-slinger.
