Toyota has officially launched its all-new bZ5, an electric coupe SUV designed to capture attention in the booming Chinese EV market.

Starting at just 129,800 yuan (around $18,000 USD), the bZ5 offers a combination of affordability, cutting-edge features, and reliable performance. This model becomes Toyota’s third dedicated EV, following the bZ3 sedan and the bZ4X crossover.

Developed on the proven e-TNGA platform, the bZ5 features a key collaboration with BYD—one of China’s top EV tech companies—by utilizing its lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery.

This partnership enhances safety, longevity, and charging efficiency. Buyers can choose from four versions: 550 Joy, 550 Pro, 550 Pro Smart Edition, and 630 Pro.

Under the hood, the bZ5 is powered by a front-mounted 200 kW motor delivering 330 Nm of torque. Two battery configurations are available: a 65.28 kWh unit offering 550 km of range and a larger 73.984 kWh pack that pushes range up to 630 km (CLTC rating). Fast charging is supported up to 90 kW, enabling a 30% to 80% charge in just 27 minutes.

On the design front, the bZ5 carries a sporty, futuristic style. A hammerhead shark-inspired front, C-shaped LED headlights, and a full-width light bar define the face.

The sleek side profile features flush door handles and 21-inch alloys, while the rear is topped off with a modern, connected taillight design. Measuring 4780 mm long with a 2880 mm wheelbase, the bZ5 offers ample space—more than the bZ4X.

Inside, the cabin is high-tech and minimalist. A 15.6-inch floating screen, digital instrument cluster, and rotary gear selector give it a modern feel. Features include gesture control, voice commands, smartphone connectivity, and nine SRS airbags.

Top variants also include Toyota’s Pilot suite with Momenta 5.0 software, LiDAR, and 33 sensing components, enabling advanced navigation-on-autopilot.

Luxuries like a JBL 10-speaker system, panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, and lie-flat “Nap Mode” seats round out the offering.

To attract early buyers, Toyota is offering a launch deal with eight perks, including a 10,000 yuan trade-in bonus. Competing against models like the Tesla Model Y and Leapmotor C10, the Toyota bZ5 stands out with its mix of price, innovation, and trusted engineering.
