Toyota is gearing up to launch its all-electric bZ5 SUV in China on June 10, in partnership with BYD for the battery and motor systems.

Developed under the FAW-Toyota joint venture, the bZ5 marks another step in Toyota’s push into the Chinese EV market. The model recently rolled off the production line at Toyota’s Tianjin facility and is built on the automaker’s e-TNGA platform.

The bZ5 will be available in several variants, offering impressive range and pricing to attract mainstream buyers. Two of the key models feature a 550 km CLTC range.

The base model is expected to be priced under 130,000 yuan (around $18,000), while a more advanced trim with L2-level driving assistance will cost under 160,000 yuan ($22,200). For those seeking longer journeys, a 630 km range version will also be offered.

A major highlight of the bZ5 is its powertrain, which is supplied by BYD. The electric SUV is equipped with a 200 kW (268 hp) front-mounted motor from BYD’s FinDreams subsidiary and powered by BYD’s advanced Blade battery technology—known for safety and efficiency.

In terms of design, the bZ5 features a modern, aerodynamic look. It sports a distinctive “hammerhead shark” front grille, a fastback silhouette, hidden door handles, and LED lighting. The SUV rides on 21-inch alloy wheels and measures 4780mm in length, 1866mm in width, and 1510mm in height, with a generous 2880mm wheelbase.

Inside, the bZ5 offers a minimalist and tech-focused cabin with a 15.6-inch floating touchscreen, digital instrument panel, and a 1.44-square-meter panoramic sunroof. Additional comforts include 256-color ambient lighting and four relaxation “nap modes.” The vehicle also includes nine airbags for enhanced safety.

For smart driving, the bZ5 is equipped with the Momenta 5.0 urban L2 advanced driving system, featuring 33 sensors and more than 30 intelligent driving functions.

With BYD tech under the hood and Toyota’s design and safety features, the bZ5 aims to make a strong impression in China’s rapidly growing EV market.
