Toyota has officially revealed the all-new ninth-generation Hilux, marking a major milestone in the legendary pickup’s 55-year legacy.
The latest Hilux lineup introduces Toyota’s first-ever battery electric version and a hydrogen fuel cell variant set for 2028. This launch reflects Toyota’s multipath strategy, offering customers a range of powertrains — from battery electric (BEV) to hybrid and internal combustion engines — to suit diverse driving conditions and markets.
Prices and Availability
The all-new Hilux will begin its market rollout in December 2025 with the BEV model leading the lineup. Toyota has yet to reveal official pricing, but the Hilux Hybrid 48V is expected to launch in spring 2026 as the volume seller for Western Europe. Meanwhile, petrol and diesel variants will remain available in Eastern European markets, ensuring Toyota meets regional demand.
Performance and Powertrains
The 2026 Hilux BEV is powered by a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery with dual eAxles, providing permanent all-wheel drive. It delivers up to 205 Nm of torque in the front and 268.6 Nm at the rear, offering a driving range of approximately 240 km (WLTP). The BEV version maintains a robust towing capacity of 1,600 kg and a payload of 715 kg while retaining the traditional Hilux off-road capability, including a 700 mm wading depth.
The Hilux Hybrid 48V pairs a 2.8-liter diesel engine with a 48V lithium-ion battery and an electric motor-generator. It delivers smoother performance, enhanced fuel efficiency, and quieter operation while maintaining up to 3,500 kg of towing and 1,000 kg payload capacity.
Exterior Design
The new Hilux adopts a “Tough and Agile” design language inspired by the new Land Cruiser. It features a bold front fascia with slim LED headlights, a classic TOYOTA nameplate bar, and redefined proportions for a more muscular stance. The BEV version gets a closed grille for improved aerodynamics and dedicated alloy wheels. A new rear deck step and redesigned side steps improve accessibility and utility.
Interior and Technology
Inside, Toyota has elevated comfort and digital sophistication. The 2026 Hilux features a fully digital cockpit with a customizable 12.3-inch driver display and touchscreen infotainment system. Wireless charging, multiple USB-C ports, and advanced connectivity through the MyToyota app enhance user convenience. The Double Cab body style, now standard, provides spacious comfort with premium materials inspired by the Land Cruiser.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Toyota’s T-Mate safety suite has been significantly expanded in the new Hilux. Advanced features include Proactive Driving Assist, Emergency Driving Stop System, Blind Spot Monitor, and Safe Exit Assist. The pickup also debuts Low Speed Acceleration Suppression and a Driver Monitor Camera. Over-the-air updates ensure that the vehicle’s safety software stays current.
Future Outlook
Toyota has confirmed plans to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux in 2028, further solidifying the model’s transition into a sustainable future. By combining strength, reliability, and innovation, the 2026 Toyota Hilux cements its position as the world’s most versatile and durable pickup — now electrified for the modern era.
