The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a two-month extension of its visa amnesty program, offering a crucial lifeline to individuals who have overstayed their visas.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP) revealed this extension on Thursday, enabling violators to rectify their residency status until December 31, 2024.
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, the Director-General of the ICP, stated that the decision to prolong the amnesty coincides with the UAE’s upcoming 53rd Union Day celebrations. This initiative reflects the nation’s commitment to humanitarian principles and its cultural values, as reported by WAM English, the official news agency of the UAE. “This initiative also responds to appeals from violators wishing to settle their status by either leaving the country or obtaining employment and modifying their residency status,” he noted.
The announcement follows a noticeable uptick in inquiries and service requests at government centers, particularly in the days leading up to the original deadline of October 31. The extension serves as a final opportunity for violators to regularize their immigration status without incurring penalties or facing entry bans into the country.
Al Khaili underscored the humanitarian intent behind the program, emphasizing that it grants individuals a chance to address their legal status and safeguard their rights, thus protecting their families from potential repercussions. Over the past two months, the initiative has witnessed a robust turnout, with many individuals taking advantage of the amnesty’s provisions.
The ICP, in collaboration with various government and private sector partners, has actively worked to mitigate obstacles faced by specific categories of violators, ensuring they can effectively navigate the regularization process within legal parameters.
However, Al Khaili firmly stated that this extension is the last opportunity for individuals to rectify their status. “Once the amnesty period concludes, fines will be imposed on those who remain in violation. The Authority will enhance inspection campaigns targeting violators in conjunction with government partners, taking decisive legal action against individuals found to be in breach after the extension period ends,” he asserted.
This extension of the visa amnesty program is a significant step toward fostering compliance among expatriates and enhancing the overall integrity of the UAE’s immigration system. By providing this crucial reprieve, the UAE continues to exemplify its commitment to inclusivity and support for individuals seeking to align their residency status with legal requirements.
