Google Maps Boosts Navigation with Gemini AI-Powered Features

Google has integrated Gemini AI into Maps, unveiling features that enhance user experience across various aspects of navigation, sightseeing, and local exploration.

This update allows users to interact with Maps in a way that feels more personalized and intuitive, helping to plan outings, locate scenic spots, and navigate more effectively.

One of the standout features is Gemini-powered trip planning. Now, users can request Maps to suggest places to visit and activities to enjoy. Whether for individuals or groups, Gemini offers tailored recommendations based on the location, and even provides summaries of user reviews.

Users can inquire about specific details like whether a venue offers outdoor seating or a quiet atmosphere. These features will be available on Android and iOS in the U.S. beginning this week.

Additionally, drivers will benefit from enhanced navigation tools. The new “add stops” feature allows users to insert landmarks, scenic spots, dining options, and attractions along their route seamlessly.

While navigating, Maps will now display clearer details like lanes, crosswalks, and road signs, guiding drivers to the correct lane to make upcoming exits. Maps also lets users report weather disruptions on their route, sharing real-time conditions with other drivers.

Parking is another area Google Maps has optimized. As users approach their destination, Maps will highlight nearby parking lots, then guide them from the car to the entrance using Street View or augmented reality walking directions. These enhancements are rolling out in over 30 metro areas worldwide, with more locations to follow.

Google also upgraded Immersive View, an AI-driven feature that simulates real-world views of parks, stadiums, and routes with dynamic weather and traffic conditions. Immersive View will now extend to 150 cities globally and include additional categories, such as college campuses.

The update will be available this week on Android and iOS in regions where Immersive View is supported.

In a related update, Google’s Waze is also receiving new features, including a Conversational Reporting tool for easy voice-based incident reports and alerts for school zones.
