Karachi, December 10, 2023 – The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) marked the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on Sunday, underscoring the importance of the timeless principles enshrined in this landmark document.
President of UNISAME, Zulfikar Thaver, emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All,” asserting that it resonates profoundly with people worldwide. The UDHR, adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948, stands as a beacon of hope and a call to action for the protection of fundamental human rights.
Thaver called upon leaders of nations, both large and small, to not only acknowledge the principles laid out in the UDHR but to actively implement and uphold them. He stressed the need for a collective commitment to fostering an environment where human rights are respected, ensuring a just and equitable society globally.
Commending the role of private sector welfare and charitable organizations in Pakistan, Thaver acknowledged their substantial contributions towards alleviating the struggles of the underprivileged. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in making life more bearable for those facing economic hardships.
UNISAME Council members highlighted the pressing need for improvements in key sectors in Pakistan, including the police force, judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and government social welfare organizations. They underscored the urgency of providing necessary support to those deserving of it, emphasizing the elimination of corruption, injustice, human rights violations, and favoritism within institutions.
With a poignant observation, the Council members pointed out the grim reality faced by the common man in Pakistan, struggling to afford even a basic daily meal due to the soaring inflation rates. They lamented the dire circumstances of the underprivileged, unable to access education, healthcare, and clothing, painting a vivid picture of the harshness of life for many.
In their demand for immediate action, UNISAME urged the government of Pakistan to redefine the poverty line, setting it at Rs 50,000. The organization advocated for comprehensive support and assistance to individuals earning below this threshold, aiming to lift them out of poverty. Their plea encompasses not only the provision of essential needs such as food, clothing, and shelter but also a commitment to free education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
As Pakistan identifies itself as a welfare state, UNISAME emphasized the government’s duty to ensure that no citizen is forced to live below the poverty line. The call to action resonates not just with the spirit of the UDHR but also underscores the urgent need for tangible steps to uplift the underprivileged and create a society where human rights are not just ideals but a lived reality for all.
