Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman score as the United States secures a historic knockout victory and sets up a last-16 clash against Belgium.

The United States booked its place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in an impressive knockout-stage performance.

The victory also ensured that all three tournament co-hosts—the United States, Canada, and Mexico—advanced to the last 16, marking a memorable milestone in the competition.

The Americans dominated possession and dictated the pace from the opening whistle, using aggressive pressing and swift attacking transitions to keep Bosnia under pressure. Folarin Balogun appeared to have opened the scoring in the 31st minute, but the goal was disallowed after an offside review.

The breakthrough eventually came moments before halftime. Malik Tillman delivered a precise pass into the penalty area, where a slight deflection sent the ball into Balogun’s path. The striker calmly slotted the ball into the net in the 45th minute to hand the United States a deserved 1-0 lead.

Balogun nearly doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time after latching onto a headed pass from Sergino Dest. However, his powerful strike crashed against the crossbar, allowing Bosnia to remain within touching distance.

Bosnia suffered another setback shortly after the restart when experienced forward Edin Dzeko was forced off the field with an injury in the 51st minute, significantly reducing the team’s attacking options.

The match took another dramatic turn in the 64th minute when Balogun received a straight red card following a VAR review for a serious foul, leaving the United States to play the remainder of the contest with 10 men.

Despite being a player down, the Americans maintained control and sealed the result in the 82nd minute. Sergino Dest earned a free kick just outside the penalty area, and Tillman curled an outstanding effort into the net to make it 2-0.

“I practiced it in training, and I am happy it went in,” Tillman said after the match. He added that the team’s fighting spirit and determination were key factors behind the victory.

The result marked only the second World Cup knockout-stage win in U.S. history and its first-ever knockout triumph against a European opponent. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his players’ belief and resilience, saying success comes to teams that continue to dream and trust their abilities.

The United States will now face Belgium in the round of 16 after the European side staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat Senegal 3-2.

Tillman acknowledged that Belgium would present a difficult challenge but expressed confidence that the team’s latest performance had provided valuable momentum heading into the next knockout fixture.

Although Bosnia’s World Cup journey ended with defeat, defender Nikola Katic described the campaign as a major achievement.

He highlighted the nation’s first-ever progression to the knockout stage and expressed hope that the team’s performances would inspire the next generation of footballers to pursue professional careers and represent Bosnia on the global stage.
