Harry Kane’s brace sends England into the knockout stage as Thomas Tuchel highlights the challenge of playing at high-altitude Mexico City.

England booked its place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 after staging a comeback to defeat the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1.

Captain Harry Kane scored twice to inspire the turnaround, but the team now faces a much tougher test against co-host Mexico in the knockout stage.

The upcoming clash is expected to present significant challenges for England, not only because of Mexico’s home support but also due to the demanding playing conditions in Mexico City, where the match will take place on Sunday.

High altitude expected to test England’s fitness

England’s previous match against DR Congo was played in Atlanta, a city located approximately 300 meters above sea level. In contrast, Mexico City stands at around 2,240 meters above sea level, where the thinner atmosphere reduces oxygen levels and makes intense physical activity more demanding.

Sports scientists generally agree that athletes require more than a week to properly adapt to high-altitude conditions by increasing red blood cell production.

England, however, is scheduled to arrive in Mexico City only two days before the crucial knockout fixture, leaving little time for acclimatization.

Mexico enjoys home advantage

Mexico enters the contest with a significant advantage, having already played three World Cup matches in Mexico City and another in Guadalajara, which is also located at a high elevation of about 1,566 meters. The familiarity with thinner air is expected to benefit the co-hosts against England.

The impact of altitude was evident in Ecuador’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the round of 32. Ecuador, which had impressed defensively earlier in the tournament, struggled to cope with Mexico’s speed and intensity after playing most of its previous matches near sea level.

Tuchel acknowledges difficult conditions

England head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted that adapting to Mexico City’s altitude in such a short period would be virtually impossible.

He explained that the limited time between matches prevented the squad from making the necessary physical adjustments required for high-altitude competition.

Tuchel added that England would have to accept the circumstances and focus on maintaining the determination and fighting spirit displayed during the comeback victory over DR Congo.

He expressed confidence that his players possess the mentality needed to overcome the difficult conditions as they pursue a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
