Islamabad, August 18, 2024 – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a critical alert for urban flooding across all major cities and urban centers in Pakistan, as more monsoon rains are anticipated from the evening of August 18th to August 19th.
The NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center has forecasted torrential rains during this period, which could lead to significant flooding in low-lying areas.
High-Risk Areas Identified
According to the NDMA’s alert, the following cities and regions are at high risk of urban flooding due to the expected heavy downpours:
• Islamabad
• Rawalpindi
• Gujranwala
• Lahore
• Sheikhupura
• Kasur
• Sialkot
• Sargodha
• Faisalabad
• Nowshera
• Peshawar
These areas, particularly the low-lying sections, may face severe waterlogging and flooding, disrupting daily life and posing risks to public safety.
Public Advisory and Precautions
The NDMA has urged the public to stay informed and keep track of weather updates and alerts through reliable sources. To facilitate this, the NDMA has launched the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, which is available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store. This app provides timely alerts, advisories, and guidelines, helping residents of vulnerable areas to stay prepared.
Citizens in the identified high-risk regions are advised to remain vigilant, follow the guidance provided by local authorities, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property from potential flooding. The public is also encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecasted period and to ensure that drainage systems around their homes are clear of blockages.
Instructions to Relevant Departments
In response to the anticipated weather conditions, the NDMA has issued directives to all relevant departments to take proactive measures to mitigate the potential effects of flooding and extreme weather. These instructions include the readiness of emergency services, the deployment of flood response teams, and the preparation of relief supplies for affected areas.
The NDMA’s alert underscores the importance of preparedness and coordination among government agencies, emergency services, and the public to minimize the impact of the expected heavy rains and urban flooding.
