Valencia CF goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala will miss the remainder of the season after medical staff confirmed that he requires surgery on a damaged meniscus, a setback that could also mark the end of his spell at the Spanish club.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper, who joined Valencia on loan from Athletic Club last summer, sustained the injury during a training session last Friday. The incident occurred while he was completing his recovery from a hamstring problem suffered during Valencia’s match against RC Celta de Vigo on January 3.
Following medical evaluations, doctors from both Valencia and Athletic Club agreed that surgery is the most suitable treatment option. While the procedure will rule Agirrezabala out for the rest of the current campaign, he is expected to make a full recovery in time for preseason preparations ahead of the 2026–27 season.
Agirrezabala arrived at Mestalla after Valencia’s former first-choice goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili completed a move to Liverpool FC. During his time with the Spanish side, the young goalkeeper made 19 appearances, delivering several impressive performances despite Valencia’s struggles in La Liga.
His loan agreement reportedly included an option for Valencia to sign him permanently for 12 million euros (approximately $13 million). However, the club’s ongoing financial constraints make it highly unlikely that the deal will be activated, suggesting that Agirrezabala may have already played his final match for the club.
With Agirrezabala sidelined, Stole Dimitrievski is expected to continue as Valencia’s first-choice goalkeeper for the remainder of the season. The North Macedonian international has performed strongly since stepping into the role, helping the team move further away from the relegation zone in recent weeks.
