Rescue efforts continue as thousands remain homeless and hundreds of buildings lie damaged after twin earthquakes
ISLAMABAD: The death toll from two devastating earthquakes in Venezuela has climbed to 4,930, while more than 20,800 people remain displaced in temporary shelters, as rescue and relief operations continue across the affected regions, authorities said on Thursday.
According to an official government statement, the number of fatalities increased by 101 over the past 24 hours. However, officials said no additional survivors had been rescued during the same period, indicating that search operations are becoming increasingly challenging.
The government said 17,907 people remain homeless following the disaster, while 21,210 survivors are currently being accommodated in 107 temporary camps established to provide emergency shelter, food, medical assistance and other essential services.
Infrastructure suffers extensive damage
The twin earthquakes caused extensive destruction to public infrastructure and residential buildings across the affected areas.
Official figures showed that 856 buildings sustained damage, including 190 structures that were completely destroyed, leaving thousands of families without homes and disrupting essential public services.
Authorities continue to assess structural damage while working to restore electricity, water supplies and transportation networks in the worst-hit regions.
International rescue teams remain on the ground
Search and recovery operations are being supported by 2,278 international rescue workers, alongside 30,989 personnel from various Venezuelan government agencies and 31,745 volunteers participating in relief efforts.
Emergency response teams remain engaged in clearing debris, searching damaged buildings and delivering humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
Officials said displaced families continue to receive food, healthcare and temporary accommodation as authorities coordinate relief operations with domestic and international partners.
Humanitarian response continues
The Venezuelan government said humanitarian operations remain focused on supporting displaced residents while accelerating recovery efforts in severely affected areas.
Authorities added that restoring critical infrastructure and expanding assistance to vulnerable communities remain top priorities as the country continues to respond to one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
Relief agencies are expected to continue monitoring conditions in the affected regions as rescue operations transition toward long-term recovery and reconstruction efforts.
