Visa Reforms to Promote Tourism in Pakistan: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad, July 29, 2024 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced on Sunday that the government has introduced significant visa reforms aimed at facilitating foreign investors, business communities, and tourists.

These measures are designed to promote tourism, boost foreign investment, and increase trade activities across the country.

In his statement, the Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized the transformative impact of these reforms, describing the initiative as a highly positive development. He highlighted that the government has approved visa-free entry for businessmen from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This move is expected to enhance investment and business opportunities from these regions, reinforcing Pakistan’s economic ties with the GCC.

Prime Minister Shehbaz further elaborated that businessmen, investors, and tourists from 126 countries will now be able to obtain visas within 24 hours through an efficient online system. Additionally, traders and tourists from these countries will be exempt from visa fees, which significantly lowers the barriers to entry for those looking to explore business or leisure opportunities in Pakistan.

Moreover, the Prime Minister Shehbaz announced special arrangements for Sikh pilgrims holding passports from third countries. These pilgrims will be able to obtain visas on arrival, a gesture aimed at fostering religious tourism and strengthening cultural ties. To further streamline the entry process for all travelers, electronic gates will be installed at Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad airports. These gates are expected to expedite the immigration process, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for visitors.

A comprehensive monitoring system will be put in place to oversee the implementation of the new visa regime. A dashboard at the Ministry of Interior will track various aspects of the policy, including visa-free entry, business visa lists, and tourist visas on arrival. This centralized monitoring will ensure the effectiveness and transparency of the new measures.

Prime Minister Shehbaz commended the Ministry of Interior, along with other relevant ministries and institutions, for their diligent efforts in executing the new visa policies. He underscored the importance of inter-ministerial cooperation in achieving the successful implementation of these reforms.

The introduction of these comprehensive visa reforms is anticipated to significantly enhance Pakistan’s appeal as a destination for international business and tourism. By lowering entry barriers and streamlining the visa process, the government aims to foster economic growth, create new opportunities for trade and investment, and strengthen global ties. This strategic move underscores Pakistan’s commitment to creating a more welcoming and business-friendly environment, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic prosperity and international reputation.
