His inaugural task involves assembling the national men’s squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia (scheduled from December 14 to January 7) and the subsequent five-match T20I series against New Zealand (slated for January 12 to 21).
Having debuted internationally in 2008, Wahab boasts an impressive cricketing career, featuring 27 Tests, 91 ODIs, and 36 T20Is. Across these formats, he secured 237 wickets and contributed 1200 runs.
Notably, Wahab emerged as Pakistan’s second-highest wicket-taker in World Cups, amassing 35 wickets over three editions of the prestigious tournament.
Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Wahab Riaz stated, “I am honored to lead the national men’s selection committee and extend my thanks to Chairman PCB Management Committee, Zaka Ashraf, for entrusting me with this responsibility. The decision to involve former players in cricketing matters is commendable, and I am committed to enhancing Pakistan cricket.”
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Wahab emphasized the significance of the upcoming Australia tour within the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle and the T20I series against New Zealand.
He highlighted the goal of building a strong unit in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June next year.
Collaborating closely with Pakistan Men’s Team Director Mohammad Hafeez, Wahab aims to leverage his rapport for the success of Pakistan cricket. Emphasizing a focus on top performers in domestic cricket, he pledged to announce well-rounded squads equipped with the necessary skillsets.
Wahab also assured players of his availability for feedback and advice, underlining his commitment to fostering a competitive and successful cricketing environment.
