Veteran Hong Kong-born actress remembered for her acclaimed role in Marvel’s Daredevil and a distinguished career spanning more than four decades
Veteran actress Wai Ching Ho, best known for playing the enigmatic Madame Gao in the Marvel television universe, has died at the age of 82 following a stroke.
The news of her passing was confirmed by fellow actor Perry Yung, who said Ho died peacefully two days after suffering a stroke. Tributes also poured in from former colleagues, including Peter Shinkoda, who remembered her as a gifted performer and a cherished friend.
“I won’t ever forget you. I learned every minute from you when we were together on and off set,” Shinkoda wrote in a heartfelt tribute.
“I know wisdom, I’d hang on your every word. We will meet again, my friend. You were beautiful,” he added.
Yung described Ho as “a kind, compassionate human being whose work as an artist lifted every production to a higher standard,” paying tribute to her professionalism and generosity throughout her career.
Born in Hong Kong in 1943, Ho began her acting career in the early 1980s and established herself as a respected figure in both film and television. She earned widespread recognition for portraying the mysterious and powerful Madame Gao in Daredevil, before reprising the role in Iron Fist and The Defenders.
Beyond her work in the Marvel franchise, Ho appeared in numerous acclaimed productions, including Hustlers and Pixar’s Turning Red, while also making memorable television appearances in Law & Order, Fresh Off the Boat and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.
Her portrayal of Madame Gao remains one of the most memorable performances in Marvel’s television universe, earning admiration from audiences for its quiet authority, intelligence and commanding screen presence.
Ho’s death marks the end of a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, during which she became a respected figure in the entertainment industry and left a lasting legacy through her performances on both the big and small screen.
