Colombo, October 2, 2025 – Bangladesh showcased a dominant all-round display to outclass Pakistan by seven wickets in their opening match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Chasing a modest target of 130, Bangladesh reached the mark with 19.5 overs to spare, underlining their strong start to the tournament.

The victory was built on a disciplined bowling effort, followed by a confident batting performance. Debutant Rubya Haider starred with an unbeaten half-century, ensuring Bangladesh crossed the finish line comfortably despite Pakistan snatching three wickets in the chase. Haider combined with skipper Nigar Sultana Joty in a crucial fifty-run partnership that steadied the innings after early jitters.

Pakistan’s bowlers had initially threatened a comeback when Diana Baig and Fatima Sana dismissed Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter cheaply. However, the Bangladesh middle order held firm, with Haider’s fluent strokes easing the pressure. Even though Sana broke the partnership late, the result was already beyond doubt.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh bowlers tore through Pakistan’s top order after Pakistan opted to bat first. Marufa Akter struck twice in the powerplay, removing Omaima Sohail and Sidra Amin. Nahida Akter followed up with two more breakthroughs, including the key wicket of Muneeba Ali. With regular strikes, Bangladesh never allowed Pakistan to settle, and despite Rameen Shamim’s 23 runs, the innings folded for just 129.

Shorna Akter’s three wickets at the tail capped a clinical bowling display. Pakistan will aim for a turnaround against India on October 5, while Bangladesh prepare for a tougher challenge against England on October 7.
