Weather Alert: PMD warns of intense downpour in upper Pakistan

Thudershower

Islamabad, July 21, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a significant weather advisory predicting heavy downpour across the upper regions of the country from July 21 to July 25, 2025.

According to the PMD, this prolonged spell of intense rain is likely to trigger flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage in multiple areas.

The PMD states that the upcoming downpour may generate flash floods in local streams and nullahs across Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Buner, Charsadda, Swabi, Mardan, Murree, Galliyat, and the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The risk also extends to hill torrents in D.G. Khan, northeast Punjab, and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Urban flooding is another major concern, with heavy downpour expected to submerge low-lying areas in major cities including Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Okara, Nowshera, and Peshawar. The PMD has cautioned that drainage systems in these cities may be overwhelmed by the volume of rainwater during the forecast period.

Additionally, the department warned that consistent downpour could trigger landslides and mudslides in vulnerable hilly regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. The PMD urged travelers to avoid unnecessary movement in these areas due to the possibility of road blockages.

Severe weather conditions including strong winds, lightning, and heavy falls are also forecasted. These may cause damage to fragile structures such as kacha houses, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions.

Synoptic Situation:

The PMD reported that moist currents from the Arabian Sea are entering upper and central Pakistan, while a westerly wave is affecting the western and northern areas of the country. These meteorological developments are expected to enhance the intensity of the downpour.

Forecast Highlights:

• Monday & Tuesday: Rain-wind/thundershower likely in Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Punjab, and Potohar region. Isolated heavyfalls anticipated.

• Past 24 Hours: Hot and humid conditions prevailed, but rainfall was recorded in Sindh, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Punjab, Balochistan, and Kashmir. Larkana received the heaviest rainfall at 66mm.

The PMD urges the public and local authorities to remain alert and take precautionary measures as the risk of damage from heavy downpour remains high throughout the week.
