Karachi, December 5, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather outlook for the next 24 hours, forecasting very cold conditions in northern Pakistan while the rest of the country is expected to remain cold and dry.
Synoptic Situation
Continental air is currently prevailing over most parts of the country, bringing dry weather conditions. Additionally, a shallow westerly wave is expected to enter the upper parts of the country from Saturday night, potentially affecting weather patterns in the coming days. This change in the weather pattern could bring further cold conditions, especially to northern regions.
Thursday’s Weather
On Thursday, the weather will remain cold and dry across most parts of Pakistan. However, the northern areas, including the mountainous regions, are expected to experience very cold conditions. Fog is likely to develop in isolated areas of Punjab and upper Sindh during the night, particularly in plain regions, reducing visibility and causing chilly conditions. This pattern is expected to persist into the night, with temperatures continuing to drop.
Friday’s Weather
For Friday, the outlook remains similar to Thursday, with cold and dry weather expected throughout much of the country. The northern regions are predicted to continue experiencing very cold weather, while fog (in patches) may linger in isolated areas of Punjab and upper Sindh during the early morning and night hours. The weather is expected to remain clear in most parts, but temperatures will continue to stay low, especially in the northern and higher altitudes.
Past 24-Hour Weather
Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry conditions prevailed across the country. The lowest recorded minimum temperatures were seen in northern areas:
• Leh: -10°C
• Skardu: -07°C
• Astore: -05°C
• Gilgit: -04°C
The continuation of cold weather in the coming days suggests that people in northern regions should be prepared for freezing temperatures, particularly at night. Meanwhile, residents in central and southern regions are advised to take precautions against fog and chilly mornings. The changing weather patterns could lead to further cold spells as the westerly wave arrives, potentially affecting various regions starting this weekend.
