May 6, 2025 – The West Indies have officially unveiled their 15-member squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) tour of Ireland and England, scheduled to take place later this month.
This European tour marks a significant phase in the West Indies’ journey towards qualifying for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027.
The tour will feature six ODIs—three matches each against Ireland and England. The squad selection underscores the West Indies’ intent to continue building momentum after their recent clean sweep of Bangladesh and a series victory over England at the end of last year.
Hard-hitting batter Shai Hope will continue to lead the side, with a strong batting core including Brandon King, Evin Lewis, and Keacy Carty. A notable addition to the squad is teenage sensation Jewel Andrew, who impressed at the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup. His inclusion signals a promising future for West Indies cricket as they invest in youth talent.
Shimron Hetmyer, a seasoned left-hander, has been left out as he is currently participating in the Indian Premier League with the Rajasthan Royals. Despite Hetmyer’s absence, the squad retains much of the same core that triumphed over Bangladesh, suggesting stability and strategic planning.
Head coach Daren Sammy expressed optimism ahead of the European tour. “These matches are crucial for our development and qualification path for the 2027 World Cup,” Sammy said. “We’ve seen great progress in our team’s consistency, and our goal is to keep pushing forward with a brand of cricket that aligns with our long-term objectives.”
In a notable coaching reshuffle, former West Indies fast bowler and 2012 T20 World Cup winner Ravi Rampaul takes over as bowling coach, replacing New Zealander James Franklin. Additionally, Irish cricket legend Kevin O’Brien will assist the squad during their matches in Ireland, adding local expertise to the campaign.
West Indies will begin their tour against Ireland in Dublin on May 21, with the final match of the series against England taking place at The Oval on June 3. The tour will serve as a critical benchmark for the team as they aim to solidify their World Cup ambitions.
