Shai Hope will captain West Indies in a demanding white-ball series against India, with uncapped batter Kamil Pooran earning a place in the T20I squad.
West Indies have announced their ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming tour of India, with Shai Hope appointed captain across both formats. The two sides will meet in a three-match ODI series followed by five T20Is.
The tour will begin with the opening ODI on September 27 at Thiruvananthapuram, as West Indies look to strengthen their preparations for major international assignments ahead.
Kamil Pooran Earns T20I Call-Up
One of the biggest talking points from the selection is the inclusion of uncapped opener Kamil Pooran in the T20I squad. His selection comes after an impressive campaign in the Caribbean Premier League 2026.
Pooran has scored 273 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 159.64, performances that have earned him an opportunity at international level. Quentin Sampson has also returned to the T20I squad after representing West Indies at this year’s T20 World Cup.
Shimron Hetmyer is another notable addition to the T20I side, providing further batting experience. However, experienced all-rounder Jason Holder has been rested for the India tour.
John Campbell Returns to ODI Squad
John Campbell has been recalled to the ODI setup after missing the final two matches of West Indies’ recent series against New Zealand. His return adds another experienced option as the team continues preparing for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
West Indies currently sit 10th in the ICC ODI Team Rankings and will not be able to secure automatic qualification early, with the qualification cycle concluding after the second ODI against India.
Sammy Highlights India Challenge
Head coach Daren Sammy has described the India series as an important opportunity to improve the team’s ODI performance and evaluate players for future roles.
The five-match T20I series will also serve as preparation for the next T20 World Cup cycle. Sammy said the contests against the reigning world champions could help West Indies develop a stronger core of players for the 2028 tournament.
