Auckland, November 5, 2025 – West Indies clinched a thrilling 7-run victory over New Zealand in the opening match of the five-match T20I series at Eden Park on Wednesday, marking their first-ever win in regulation time against the Kiwis on New Zealand soil.
After being asked to bat first, West Indies posted a total of 164 runs, adapting quickly to the two-paced surface. Captain Shai Hope led from the front with a composed half-century, while Rovman Powell’s late surge added crucial runs. Despite wickets falling regularly, the Caribbean side managed to score 51 runs in the final five overs.
In reply, New Zealand began briskly with Tim Robinson’s fluent start, but consistent breakthroughs from West Indies bowlers kept the hosts under pressure. Akeal Hosein and Roston Chase were instrumental in tightening the screws during the middle overs. Chase, who also contributed with the bat, was named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance.
At one stage, New Zealand needed 56 runs off 18 balls with one wicket in hand, but Mitchell Santner’s explosive late cameo revived hopes with a 23-run over. However, Romario Shepherd held his nerve in the final over to seal a dramatic win.
Post-match, Hope credited clear communication and composure for the victory, while Santner praised the Windies’ execution and acknowledged that his side must quickly regroup before the second T20I, scheduled at the same venue on November 6.
The win not only gives West Indies a 1-0 lead but also boosts their confidence after defending the lowest-ever total successfully at Eden Park.
