West Indies Paceman Joseph Suspended for On-Field Misconduct

Barbados, November 8, 2024 – West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph has been handed a two-match suspension following an on-field altercation during the team’s victory over England in the third ODI in Barbados on Wednesday. The incident, which involved a disagreement between Joseph and captain Shai Hope over field placement, saw the pacer leave the field temporarily, causing the team to play one player short for an entire over.

The tense exchange unfolded after Joseph completed his fourth over and clashed with Hope regarding a fielding adjustment. As the discussion escalated, Joseph departed to the sidelines, leaving his teammates without his services for the following over. Although he returned to claim two crucial wickets, bolstering the West Indies’ defense and sealing an eight-wicket series-clinching victory over England, the episode was later reviewed by Cricket West Indies (CWI).

In a statement released on Thursday, CWI announced Joseph’s suspension, citing his conduct as “falling short of Cricket West Indies’ standards of professionalism.” Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, commented on the disciplinary action, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to maintaining core values. “Alzarri’s behavior did not align with the standards Cricket West Indies upholds,” Bascombe said. “Such conduct cannot be overlooked, and we have taken decisive action to ensure the gravity of the situation is fully acknowledged.”

Joseph himself expressed remorse over the incident, acknowledging that his emotions had influenced his actions on the field. “I recognize that my passion got the best of me,” Joseph admitted. “I have personally apologized to Captain Shai Hope, my teammates, and management. I also extend my sincerest apologies to West Indies fans. I understand that even a brief lapse in judgment can have a far-reaching impact, and I deeply regret any disappointment caused.”

The ban means Joseph will miss the first two matches of the upcoming five-match T20I series between West Indies and England, which begins in Barbados on Saturday. His absence will be a significant blow to the West Indies bowling lineup, which will have to recalibrate without their leading pacer for the initial phase of the series.

Joseph’s suspension serves as a reminder of CWI’s dedication to fostering professionalism and teamwork within the squad. As the West Indies gear up for the T20I series, the team will look to regroup and maintain momentum in Joseph’s absence, aiming to set the tone for a competitive series against their English rivals.
