WhatsApp has started rolling out its new username reservation feature to a limited number of users, marking the first phase of a wider launch that will eventually allow people to connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature, which was first introduced last month, enables eligible users to reserve a unique username before its broader public release. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has now begun activating reserved usernames for selected accounts across both the beta and stable versions of the app.
The rollout remains limited, with only a small number of users currently able to access the feature.
How the WhatsApp username reservation feature works
Users who have received access can reserve a username by navigating to Settings > Account > Username within WhatsApp.
During the setup process, users can also configure privacy settings that determine how others can contact them. They can choose whether anyone with their username can start a conversation or require new contacts to enter a four-digit PIN alongside the username for added security.
The new system is designed to give users greater control over their privacy while making it easier to connect without exchanging phone numbers.
WhatsApp adds anti-impersonation protection
To reduce the risk of scams and identity theft, WhatsApp has introduced verification measures for certain usernames.
If a selected username is already associated with a Facebook or Instagram account, WhatsApp may ask users to verify that they own the linked account before allowing the reservation.
The additional verification is intended to prevent impersonation of public figures, brands and other high-profile accounts.
Limited rollout underway
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has started enabling reserved usernames for a small group of users.
Those who receive access will notice a banner at the top of their chat list confirming that their username is active and ready to be shared with new contacts.
Both beta testers and some regular WhatsApp users are reportedly seeing the feature, although availability remains limited during this initial rollout phase.
How to check if you have access
Users can determine whether the feature is available on their account by:
Opening WhatsApp
Going to Settings > Account > Username
Looking for a confirmation message showing that their username is active
Checking for a banner at the top of the chat list announcing that the username is ready to share
If the feature has not yet reached an account, WhatsApp will display a message indicating that usernames will become available soon.
The gradual rollout suggests WhatsApp is testing the feature before expanding availability to all users worldwide.
