WhatsApp Testing Guest Chats Feature for Non-Account Users

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature called Guest Chats, allowing users to start conversations with people who do not have a WhatsApp account.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.22.13 and is expected to launch soon on both Android and iOS platforms.

The Guest Chats feature is designed to improve accessibility and expand WhatsApp’s user base by allowing communication beyond its current ecosystem. Users will be able to generate a secure chat link and share it via SMS, email, or social media with individuals who don’t have WhatsApp installed or an active account.

Once the link is accessed, the guest will be redirected to a web-based interface that functions similarly to WhatsApp Web. This enables secure, end-to-end encrypted messaging between a WhatsApp user and a non-registered guest. Despite its convenience, the feature comes with some limitations—guest users won’t be able to send media files, GIFs, voice notes, or initiate video calls.

This functionality appears to be part of WhatsApp’s compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which mandates platform interoperability among major online services. The goal is to enhance cross-platform communication, making it easier for users across different messaging apps to interact securely.

The introduction of Guest Chats marks a significant shift in WhatsApp’s traditionally closed system, opening new doors for communication while maintaining strong encryption standards. By enabling chat capabilities without requiring account creation, WhatsApp may attract more users and increase engagement, particularly in regions where users are hesitant to download new apps.

The feature is currently under testing and may be rolled out globally once finalized.
