New feature aims to automatically move promotional messages from large businesses out of users’ main chat list
WhatsApp is testing a new feature designed to reduce clutter in users’ chat lists by automatically moving promotional messages from large businesses into a dedicated “Offers & Updates” folder.
The feature is aimed at users who receive frequent messages from businesses such as banks, airlines, retailers and delivery services, which often crowd personal conversations in the main chat list.
Business messages moved after a set time
According to reports, WhatsApp is experimenting with different time intervals before messages are moved, with the maximum delay currently set at 24 hours.
Once the specified period has passed, promotional content, discount codes and delivery notifications from large businesses will automatically be transferred to the new Offers & Updates folder, helping users keep their primary inbox cleaner.
Users can disable the feature
WhatsApp will allow users who prefer the current experience to turn the feature off through the app’s settings.
However, users will not be able to choose their own custom time limit. Instead, they will have to use the default duration selected by Meta or disable the feature entirely.
Personal chats remain unaffected
The new folder will initially apply only to messages sent by large businesses. Personal conversations and chats with small businesses will continue to appear in the main chat list.
WhatsApp is reportedly considering extending the feature to include messages from smaller businesses in the future, although no timeline has been announced.
WhatsApp aims for a cleaner messaging experience
The introduction of the Offers & Updates folder reflects WhatsApp’s broader effort to improve chat organisation by separating promotional and transactional messages from personal conversations.
If rolled out widely, the feature could make it easier for users to manage business notifications while keeping their main chat list focused on family, friends and important conversations.
