Sony Assures Plenty of PS5 Stock Ahead of GTA 6 Launch

PlayStation says manufacturing and global supply chains are fully prepared to meet expected surge in demand for Grand Theft Auto VI

Sony has reassured gamers that there will be ample PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles available worldwide ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), easing fears of another hardware shortage.

With GTA 6 expected to become one of the biggest video game releases in history, concerns had been growing that demand for PS5 consoles could once again outstrip supply, similar to what happened following the console’s launch in 2020.

Sony says manufacturing is operating at full capacity

Speaking about its preparations, representatives from Sony Interactive Entertainment said the company has strengthened its manufacturing capacity and global supply chain to ensure sufficient console availability.

“We have everything in order from a manufacturing capacity perspective to address global supply chains. We are at full speed there, and to deliver the units that we need to provide,” Sony representatives said.

The company believes these measures will ensure retailers receive enough inventory to meet demand when GTA 6 launches later this year.

Lessons learned from the PS5 shortage

The original PS5 launch was heavily affected by worldwide semiconductor shortages and logistics disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Strong consumer demand, combined with limited production capacity, resulted in severe stock shortages that lasted nearly two years.

Many gamers were forced to wait months to purchase the console, while others had to pay inflated prices from third-party resellers and scalpers.

Since then, Sony has significantly expanded its manufacturing capabilities and restructured its global supply network to prevent similar issues in the future.

GTA 6 expected to drive massive console demand

Industry analysts expect Grand Theft Auto VI to generate record-breaking sales across PlayStation and Xbox platforms, prompting many players to upgrade to current-generation hardware.

Sony’s preparations are intended to ensure both existing PlayStation users and newcomers can purchase a PS5 at the recommended retail price instead of turning to scalpers.

The company’s confidence comes as excitement continues to build for Rockstar Games’ flagship title, which is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time.
