WhatsApp Tests View-Once Disappearing Messages Feature on iOS

IOS 17

WhatsApp is reportedly expanding its new View-Once disappearing messages feature to iOS users after initially testing it on Android devices. The upcoming feature is currently available for select beta testers and is expected to bring enhanced privacy controls to chats on the messaging platform.

The latest development was spotted by WABetaInfo in WhatsApp beta version 26.19.10.72 for iOS. The feature introduces a new way for users to send messages that automatically disappear shortly after being read.

How the New WhatsApp Feature Works

According to reports, users can enable the feature through the “After reading” option located inside the Default message timer settings. Once activated, senders can choose a countdown duration of 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours for messages to remain visible after being opened by the recipient.

The feature also includes protection for unread messages. If a recipient does not open the message, it will automatically disappear after 24 hours.

For example, if a user sends a message at 10 AM with a 5-minute timer selected, the message will disappear from the sender’s device at 10:05 AM. If the recipient opens the message later at 10:10 AM, the chat will automatically vanish from their device at 10:15 AM.

Focus on Privacy and Secure Messaging

WhatsApp has been continuously introducing privacy-focused features in recent years. The addition of View-Once disappearing messages could offer users more control over sensitive conversations and temporary information shared through chats.

The feature may prove useful for users sending confidential details, personal media, or time-sensitive messages that should not remain permanently visible in conversations.

Limited Beta Availability for Now

Currently, the feature is only available to some WhatsApp beta testers on iOS. WhatsApp has not officially announced a release timeline for the stable version on either Android or iPhone devices.

However, the ongoing testing suggests the company is preparing for a wider rollout in the coming months. More details are expected once WhatsApp completes beta testing and finalizes the feature for public release.
