World Cup 2026: Cabo Verde Creates History as Underdogs Stun Heavyweights

Sports

Cabo Verde secures its first-ever World Cup point, while Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and New Zealand earn valuable draws against favored opponents.

Several underdog nations produced memorable performances at the FIFA World Cup on Monday, with Cabo Verde making history by earning its first-ever point at the global tournament.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and New Zealand also delivered resilient displays to secure draws against more highly rated opponents.

Making its debut appearance at the World Cup, Cabo Verde stunned European champions Spain with a disciplined defensive performance in Atlanta.

Despite Spain dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the African nation held firm to secure a goalless draw and register the first World Cup point in its history.

Spain controlled nearly three-quarters of possession and attempted 27 shots on goal. However, veteran goalkeeper Vozinha produced an outstanding performance, repeatedly denying Spanish attackers and preserving a historic result for his team.

Cabo Verde head coach Bubista praised his players for showcasing the country’s determination and fighting spirit on the world stage. He emphasized that the result reflected the resilience and character of the nation.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente expressed disappointment at his side’s inability to convert chances, admitting his team lacked the sharpness and finishing touch required to break down a well-organized defense.

Saudi Arabia Frustrates Uruguay

In Miami, Saudi Arabia secured a valuable 1-1 draw against Uruguay. Abdulelah Alamri gave the Green Falcons the lead shortly before halftime with a close-range finish.

Uruguay responded late in the match when Maximiliano Araujo scored after goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais initially saved a powerful header from Federico Vinas. The result highlighted Saudi Arabia’s growing competitiveness on the international stage.

Saudi Arabia coach Georgios Donis noted his team controlled large portions of the first half but admitted the intensity dropped after the break, allowing Uruguay to create more opportunities.

Egypt and New Zealand Earn Important Points

Meanwhile, Egypt held Belgium to a 1-1 draw in Seattle. Emam Ashour opened the scoring with a superb long-range effort before Belgium equalized through an unfortunate own goal by Mohamed Hany after pressure from Romelu Lukaku.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said his side was disappointed not to secure all three points, insisting the victory had been within reach.

In Los Angeles, New Zealand fought back to claim a 2-2 draw against Iran. Elijah Just scored twice for the Oceania side, while Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi found the net for Iran.

The latest round of fixtures demonstrated that at World Cup 2026, underdogs are proving capable of challenging football’s traditional powerhouses and producing historic results.
