Xiaomi has officially launched the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max in China, with the Pro variants featuring a distinctive secondary display on the back — seamlessly integrated into the large iPhone-like camera island.
While rear screens have appeared in past smartphone designs, including some from Xiaomi, they often disappeared after a generation or two. However, this time, Xiaomi is making it clear that the feature is here to stay.
According to Xiaomi President Lu Weibing, both the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will continue to feature the rear display. The company isn’t treating it as a passing gimmick; instead, Xiaomi is expanding its R&D investment to enhance the screen’s functionality through additional software features.
Xiaomi reportedly invested CNY 1 billion in research and development for the 2.1-inch LTPO AMOLED rear screen used in the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. This innovation has already proven successful, setting new records for the company. Within just the first five minutes of release, the Xiaomi 17 Pro series achieved remarkable sales, followed by a milestone of over 1 million units shipped in record time.
Overall, the Xiaomi 17 series has experienced a 20% increase in sales compared to its predecessor, while the Pro models have achieved three times the sales of the previous Xiaomi 15 Pro.
Xiaomi is also planning to roll out new software updates that will enhance the usability of the rear screen. One of the first major updates, expected by the end of this month, will introduce real-time translation directly on the rear display. The company’s long-term goal is to add new features every month, transforming the rear screen into a practical, innovative tool rather than just a design novelty.
With these advancements, Xiaomi is signaling its commitment to redefining smartphone design and functionality, ensuring the rear display becomes a signature feature for its flagship lineup moving forward.
