YouTube has begun rolling out its picture-in-picture (PiP) feature to non-Premium users globally, marking a significant shift in how users can multitask while watching videos on mobile devices. Previously, this feature was largely limited to Premium subscribers or users based in the United States.
With the latest update, non-paying users on both Android and iOS devices can now continue watching videos in a floating window while using other apps. This change expands access to one of YouTube’s most convenient features, allowing a broader audience to benefit from multitasking capabilities.
Limited Access for Free Users
Despite the wider rollout, the feature comes with certain restrictions. Non-Premium users will only be able to use picture-in-picture mode for long-form, non-music content. This means that videos such as vlogs, tutorials, podcasts, and other general content can be viewed in PiP mode, while music-related videos remain excluded.
Interestingly, users in the United States are not affected by this limitation, as they have already had broader access to PiP functionality regardless of subscription status.
Music Content Still Restricted
YouTube continues to restrict PiP access for music content among free users. According to the platform, music content includes official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and even user-generated videos that primarily feature music.
This approach effectively places non-Premium users and Premium Lite subscribers on similar footing, as both groups face limitations when it comes to background playback or PiP for music.
A Step Toward Greater Accessibility
The global expansion of picture-in-picture for free users reflects YouTube’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience without fully removing the incentives tied to its Premium subscription. By allowing PiP for non-music videos, the platform provides added flexibility while still keeping music playback as a premium feature.
As competition among streaming and video platforms continues to grow, such updates may help YouTube maintain its user base by offering more accessible features to a wider audience, even without a paid subscription.
