Colombo, February 19, 2026 – Zimbabwe defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets on Thursday to top Group B of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, delivering a thrilling performance that highlighted their composure under pressure.
Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 179, led by a brilliant half-century from Pathum Nissanka and a fiery 44 off 25 balls from Pavan Rathnayake. Dunith Wellalage provided crucial finishing touches. For Zimbabwe, Graeme Cremer led the bowling attack with two wickets, while Brad Evans and Blessing Muzarabani claimed two wickets each. Ryan Burl also chipped in with one, although the bowlers conceded slightly more runs than ideal.
Chasing 180, Zimbabwe started steadily at 20/0 in the first three overs. The openers then accelerated to 35 runs in the last three overs of the Powerplay, putting together a 69-run stand with Brian Bennett anchoring one end. Ryan Burl injected momentum with a quick cameo before another 69-run partnership between skipper Sikandar Raza and Bennett put Zimbabwe firmly in control. Bennett remained unbeaten, scoring a fine half-century, while Tony Munyonga hit a decisive six in the final over to seal the victory.
Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza, awarded Player of the Match for his quick-fire 45 off 26 balls, praised his teammates for building strong partnerships and executing the chase strategically. Raza said, “Once I found my rhythm, I focused on keeping up with the required rate. The openers and Brian Bennett were exceptional in taking the game deep.”
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka admitted that his team fell short in bowling and fielding, despite a solid batting effort. He vowed to regroup and come back stronger in the Super 8s.
With this win, Zimbabwe remain unbeaten in the group stage, reinforcing their reputation as formidable underdogs and entering the Super 8s with confidence and momentum.
